Complainant Name: Clauses Noted: 1 Publication: Daily Mail Complaint: Annie Howard complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published an article which inaccurately claimed that a quarter of all sickness benefit claimants have a criminal record in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. Resolution: The complaint was resolved when the newspaper amended the headline of its online article to make clear that a quarter of those claiming some sickness benefits have a criminal record and added the following corrective footnote to the piece: In an earlier version of this article the headline suggested that the study was referring to all types of sickness benefits. We are happy to clarify the study includes only those who are on Incapacity Benefit and Support Allowance.Date Published: 24/09/2012 << Go Back |
