Gair & Gibson Solicitors complained to the Press Complaints Commission on behalf of Ms Mary Reid who considered that the newspaper had published an article breaching Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice.
The complainant was of the view that the headline to the article had been inaccurate; in particular, she had not denied being a Gypsy, and was extremely proud of her Gypsy heritage. The complainant felt that the article headline bore no relation to the story reported.
The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the removal of the online article, and the publication of the following apology:
Mary ReidOn 31 January, as part of an article concerning the pending court case against Mary Reid over the filling in of a census form, we incorrectly stated that she had denied being a Gypsy. In fact, Mary Reid is a Gypsy and is extremely proud of her heritage. At no time has she said that she is not a Gypsy. We offer her our apologies for this error.
